19. ORIGINAL LAMP MONITORING UNIT
This is a separate item of hardware and is not part of the controller. It should not be
mistaken for the ‘integral’ Red Lamp Monitor facility on the ‘ancillary processor card’,
see section 25.
The Lamp Monitoring Unit provides a means to check that the signals at an
intersection are in the required state and no failures have occurred. Very little pre-
installation configuration is required as the LMU has the ability to “learn” the
intersection and report any lamp failures.
There are six types of controller outputs that can be monitored.
1) Wait indicators, single green arrows and secret signs
2) Pedestrian (2 aspect)
3) Vehicle (3 aspect)
4) Regulatory signs (only during bright state of controller)
5) Pelican - vehicle (3 aspect)
6) Pelican - pedestrian (2 aspect)
A single LMU is capable of monitoring up to 15 controller outputs.
Each output from the controller that is monitored provides information about the
current flowing, status of the green signal for that output and value of mains voltage.
The inputs are monitored by the software at a rate of 1 per mains cycle, this checks if
the status is correct and determines if any lamps have failed.
Fault information is sent out through outputs which are connected directly to the OTU
with standard lamp monitoring or via the controller with red lamp monitoring.
