18.7 SIGNAL DIMMING
Signal dimming is provided to dim the signals during darkness hours under control of a
photo-electric cell mounted on a signal head.
There are three values of dimming voltage available:
• 120V
• 140V
• 160V (preferred value)
The type of dimming transformer required depends on the value of the dimming
voltage and the total average power load on the controller. For selection of the
Dimming Transformer see the General Handbook 667/HB/20200/000.
Figure 21.1 indicates where to specify the dimming voltage required.
18.7.1 Dimming by Time of Day
The dimming facility may be operated by time of day rather than a light operated
switch (Solar Cell). To allow this facility to be implemented, the Solar Cell input of the
controller must be wired to mains supply voltage to switch the controller to ‘DIM’
permanently. This state is then ‘overridden’ by special conditioning to switch the
controller to the Bright State.
Normally, the time of dim state change is ‘hard coded’ into the special conditioning
(using the special conditioning compare facility to compare the RTC to a fixed value).
Although this means that if the time of the dim state change needs to be changed, the
controller will need to be re-configured, the advantage is that changing the MTC
timetable will not alter the dimming facility.
