9.9.1 Example Of Simple Linked Installation

A simple linked installation covering three intersections on a main road into a city

(Figure 9.6) is used as an example. At each of the three intersections A, B and C, a

cableless linking facility is used to drive the respective controllers.

A 3-intersection stretch of main road, indicating group timings at each intersection and

progressive plan starts/offsets along the route, for:

(a) Morning into-city peak (Plan 0)

(b) Evening out-of-city peak (Plan 1)

9.9.2 Offset Timing

During morning peaks, traffic flowing into the city centre (C-B-A) is required to meet

a succession of signals at green (a ‘green wave’). Typically, free flowing morning peak

traffic takes 20 seconds to travel from C to B and 15 seconds from B to A. The main

road lights at B should therefore change to green 20 seconds after those at C, and

those at A a further 15 seconds later. Offset timings of 20 seconds at B with respect to

C, and 15 seconds at A with respect to B are therefore required.
